When did anyone last look inside the rooftop tank?
Not from the stairwell. Not a glance at the cover from the top of the stairs. Inside, lift the cover and aim a torch at the water surface, the walls, and the base.
For most households in Karachi, the answer is never. The tank fills when KWSB supply arrives, the taps run when the pump switches on, and the water looks clear when it comes out of the tap. Nothing about the tank’s external appearance suggests anything needs checking.
Meanwhile, the cover has been cracking under six months of direct summer sun. Construction dust from road excavation across the city has been settling on the roof surface around the tank opening since January. The vent pipe that allows air to escape as the tank fills may not have been capped since the building was constructed. The first monsoon rain doesn’t clean the roof. It carries months of accumulated debris toward the lowest points, including the tank cover and the inlet pipe where the water supply enters.
A tank that has never been opened looks identical from outside to a tank whose interior walls carry algae, whose base holds a layer of sediment, and whose stored water has been absorbing construction particulate through a cracked cover since the last time it rained. The outside tells nothing about what’s inside.
Monsoon Rain Washes Six Months of Rooftop Accumulation Toward the Tank Opening
Karachi’s dry season runs from October through June. Eight months without significant rain means eight months of dust, soot, pigeon droppings, and airborne particulate settling on every horizontal rooftop surface without being washed away. By July, Karachi rooftops carry a substantial layer of accumulated dust and debris. Most of it is invisible from below, but it is still there.
Road excavation across the city since early 2026 has added construction-grade particulate to that accumulation. Silica dust from broken road surfaces and cement powder from exposed sub-base material don’t stay on the roads where they’re generated. Wind carries these particles across the city and deposits them on rooftop surfaces. Tank covers, vent-pipe openings, and inlet connections all collect the dust. The first monsoon rain doesn’t clean the roof. It moves what’s on the roof. Water running across a dusty rooftop surface carries the accumulated material with it, flowing toward drainage points and low-lying areas. Several of these signs can only be identified from the rooftop. A tank that appears to be functioning normally from inside the building may be showing all four from the rooftop.
A cover that no longer sits flush. Plastic tank covers harden, warp, and crack under Karachi’s summer sun. A cover that seated evenly when the tank was new may have a gap along one edge after three or four summers of direct heat exposure. Running a hand around the edge of the cover while pressing down on it identifies gaps that aren’t visible standing above the tank. Any gap becomes an entry point. Monsoon runoff, insects, bird droppings, and accumulated dust can all enter through it.
An uncapped or deteriorated vent pipe. Every rooftop tank has a vent pipe that allows air to escape as water fills the tank from below. A vent pipe with no cap, or whose mesh cap has corroded and fallen away, is an open pipe leading directly into the tank interior. Insects enter, airborne debris enters, and during monsoon, water that splashes onto the roof enters through the vent if it sits lower than the surrounding surface or lacks a protective cover.
A change in water taste or smell. Water that has taken on a musty, earthy, or chemically different quality compared to earlier in the season is carrying something the tap water wasn’t carrying before. Sediment disturbed from the tank base during a KWSB supply surge, algae growing on tank walls where light enters through a cracked cover, or bacterial biofilm accumulating on internal surfaces. None of these are visible at the tap, but all remain present in the stored water.. A taste change before monsoon means the contamination predates the rain.
A cleaning gap of more than six months. A tank not professionally cleaned since last monsoon, or longer, has accumulated sediment at its base, mineral scale on its walls from Karachi’s hard water supply, and a biofilm layer on all internal surfaces. None of these are removed by draining the tank and refilling it. They require physical cleaning of the interior with appropriate agents.
Signs that a rooftop water tank needs inspection before monsoon include a cracked or poorly fitting cover that allows debris entry, an uncapped or deteriorated vent pipe, a change in water taste or smell, and a cleaning gap of more than six months. A Tank That Looks Clean From Outside Has Three Contamination Points Inside
A rooftop tank whose exterior is clean, whose cover appears intact from above, and whose water runs clear at the tap may still have all three of these conditions developing inside simultaneously.
Sediment at the base. KWSB water is not clean water in the municipal treatment sense. It carries particulate from the distribution network, including pipe scale, sand, and organic material. This material settles at the bottom of every storage tank over time. A tank refilling from low supply triggers a surge that lifts the settled sediment and distributes it through the water column. The sediment that settled over six months is delivered to the taps in the hour after KWSB supply arrives and the tank refills aggressively.
Algae on internal walls. Rooftop tanks are exposed to direct sun for most of the day. A tank cover made from translucent plastic, or one that has cracked enough to allow light entry at the edges, creates conditions for algae growth on the tank walls and water surface. Algae is not removed by draining and refilling. It has attached to the wall surface and requires physical scrubbing with appropriate cleaning agents to remove.
Bacterial biofilm on all internal surfaces. Biofilm is a thin layer of bacterial communities that adheres to surfaces in contact with stored water. It develops over time on tank walls, the underside of covers, the inlet pipe interior, and the pump connection. Biofilm is invisible at the tap, but it continuously contributes to the bacterial load in the stored water. It contributes to the bacterial load in the water supply continuously and is not disrupted by routine tank use or even draining.

A Pre-Monsoon Tank Inspection Covers the Cover, the Interior, and the Inlet Connection
A pre-monsoon tank assessment at Kaacib starts on the roof, not at the tap. Water quality problems that manifest inside the building originate at the tank, and the tank’s condition is established by what’s accessible at the top of the building.
The cover is inspected first. Seating, seal condition, and material integrity are checked.
