Thailand’s Fuel Subsidy Collapse Signals Risk for Pakistan
Thailand’s government recently faced backlash after its fuel subsidy strategy failed to control rising prices. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul publicly apologized after the policy created more problems than relief.
A Miscalculated Policy:
The issue began when geopolitical tensions, particularly involving the Middle East, disrupted global oil supplies and pushed fuel prices upward. To protect citizens, Thailand introduced subsidies to artificially keep fuel prices low.
However, authorities wrongly assumed the crisis—linked to tensions between the Iran and the United States—would be short-lived. Instead, prolonged instability led to unintended consequences.
Cheap fuel triggered panic buying, shortages in several regions, and illegal cross-border smuggling. At the same time, the subsidy program severely strained the national budget.
Policy Reversal and Public Reaction:
As financial pressure mounted, the government abruptly ended the subsidies. This decision caused an immediate spike in fuel prices, sparking public frustration.
In response, the Prime Minister issued a formal apology, acknowledging the government’s misjudgment and the resulting economic disruption.
A New Targeted Approach:
Following criticism, Thailand has shifted its strategy. Instead of broad subsidies, the government now aims to support vulnerable groups such as low-income households, farmers, and the transport sector.
While limited subsidies remain to keep prices competitive regionally, heavy intervention has been scaled back.
Implications for Pakistan:
Pakistan appears to be heading down a similar path. The government has been absorbing fuel costs to shield consumers after a significant price hike earlier.
Petrol prices have remained unchanged for several weeks, signaling continued government intervention. However, like Thailand, this policy is increasing pressure on national financial reserves.
Moving Toward Targeted Subsidies:
To address this, Pakistan is expected to phase out broad subsidies and introduce a targeted system. Reports suggest an app-based quota mechanism that will limit subsidized fuel to specific groups, including motorcycle and rickshaw users.
