Pakistan Receives New Oil Shipments as Authorities Move to Stabilize Fuel Supply

Pakistan has started receiving fresh oil cargoes as the government works to maintain stable fuel supplies amid regional shipping disruptions and rising concerns over energy security. Officials say several shipments carrying large volumes of fuel have begun reaching the country, while more deliveries are scheduled throughout March to prevent shortages and support the national supply chain.

Fresh Cargoes Arrive at Pakistani Ports

According to reports, at least four oil cargoes with a combined volume of more than 176,000 metric tonnes have started arriving. Officials also confirmed that additional petroleum shipments are expected in the coming weeks to ensure the country maintains adequate fuel reserves.

The development comes as Pakistan navigates uncertainty in global energy markets, largely driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East that have affected shipping routes and oil prices. Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik said multiple shipments were expected to reach the country earlier this week as part of efforts to keep supply uninterrupted.

Authorities have also increased coordination with provincial governments to prevent hoarding, panic buying, or disruptions in distribution across major cities and industrial areas.

Government Secures Multiple International Supplies

Earlier planning for March included four crude oil shipments sourced from different international suppliers. These shipments include one cargo from Saudi Arabia, one from the United Arab Emirates routed through the Fujairah oil hub, and two additional shipments from the United States.

The Saudi and UAE cargoes are each expected to carry around 70,000 tonnes of fuel, providing temporary support to Pakistan’s domestic fuel supply and refining operations.

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb confirmed that the government has also secured further petroleum shipments for the coming weeks. He stated that the country’s current fuel reserves remain stable and that the supply chain continues to operate normally.

During a recent government review meeting, officials reported that more cargoes were already en route while refinery operations and import schedules were being closely monitored to ensure consistent supply nationwide.

Rising Import Costs Remain a Concern

Despite the arrival of new shipments, officials remain concerned about the potential financial impact of volatile global oil prices. Ongoing instability in regional shipping lanes could increase Pakistan’s monthly oil import bill by roughly $600 million if prices continue to rise.

Pakistan recently increased fuel prices as part of its routine price adjustment mechanism. According to Pakistan State Oil, petrol currently costs Rs 321.17 per litre, while high-speed diesel is priced at Rs 335.86 per litre.

Analysts say the government is attempting to secure adequate supplies in advance to avoid sudden shortages, particularly as summer approaches when fuel demand typically increases due to higher transportation and electricity generation needs.

Broader Energy Concerns

The oil shipments come at a time when Pakistan is also dealing with wider energy challenges, including pressure on foreign exchange reserves and the need to manage its import bill carefully. Energy imports make up a significant portion of the country’s total imports, meaning fluctuations in oil prices can quickly impact the broader economy.

For now, the arrival of multiple cargoes is expected to provide short-term relief and reassure markets that fuel supplies remain stable. However, authorities continue to monitor global oil prices, freight costs, and regional tensions that could influence Pakistan’s energy outlook in the coming months.
